Information Technology as a Gateway to the World???

I believe that Information Technology is a Gateway to the World because after taking this project in WISE we learned how the entire world is connected through the Internet. It was interesting also realizing that although the world is connected through the Internet there can be multiple interpretations to the way things are presented through the world. For example pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead.

After discovering that I can talk to anyone in the world through virtual worlds, such as There and blogs, it is amazing how i did not know this before. What really interested me is how in a couple years there may be more virtual universities than real universities. This was extremely interesting since as teenagers we are always told not to spend so much time on the computer, and then we may go to college and sit there for an hour or more listening to classes.

My favorite thing that we did in this class was the discussions on if the Internet is bad or good, and the discussion on real and virtual. This was interesting because there was no one answer, and also the answer was different for everyone. Also listening to the two guest speakers was interesting because you could see different careers in the same field of work.

Guest Speakers

After listening to the information given by Dr. Maitland and Dr. Kvasny who are placed within the IT field, I have learned that I am very interested in this field as well. I will most likely take their advice of how a minor in the IST field can set you apart from other students, and can benefit your future. What really interested me was how that can decided what they want to do during each year. I would like to do something like that because I only enjoy studying what I believe is interesting. If I am coerced into studying a specific topic I won't enjoy myself and might not work to the best of my ability which is a weak aspect of myself.

What they were doing with developing countries, and the HIV studies was also interesting, on how they were using technology to learn more about the HIV information that was posted on women blogs. The health care and food program that Dr. Maitland was talking about I thought was very interesting, that the are manipulating the people to allow them to have a better healthier life.

They answered all of the questions well enough that we could relate them into what we would want to do in our future. I enjoyed how they talked about their lives outside their work, because that is what each of us will have when we start out careers. Them stating that we should balance our work and lifestyle was interesting that how women do have the trouble of having children and keeping a demanding job. Just listening to their life experiences show what we may have to look forward to in our future, and some complicated situations that we will encounter.

What has been learned?

Through the two days in the IST class, I've learned that the IT world is a male-dominated field, but women are slowly becoming more interested and involved with IST. What was interesting was how more girls over the age of 18 are playing more video games then boys ages 6-17. This to me was very interesting because I would think that due to the health concerns in our society that more younger boys would be sitting in the house just playing video games all of the time.
Absent Voices were also interesting to learn about, on how people try to push their beliefs onto people by trying to only create technology for a certain group of people. Especially about the man who created bridges to keep people out.
Trying to define Technology was a difficult thing to do in class today, since we determined that almost everything is technology, it just may not use electricity, or be battery powered. I enjoyed talking about the pros and cons about certain types of technologies, and how the light bulb is both a good and bad type of technology.
I'm really looking forward to meeting the women in the IT fields and learning about career options that I have and determine what would interest me the most.

Guest Speaker Questions

1. Do you feel that women are taken seriously in the IT field??
2. How does your job try and incorporate the ITP triangle??

5 Important Technology

The fridge is used today to allow families to keep food fresh longer. In today's society people are too busy to make a meal for the entire family at one specific time therefore the fridge allows the food to stay fresh for days, so the family members can eat time to time when they are hungry to avoid the hassle of making food all of the time.

Books allow people to learn information. This information can then easily be found since it is in one area. There are books, such as the Dictionary, that allow people to understand words that they read or hear throughout the day. Also people can write down stories in books to pass them on to future generations or to unknown audiences

The cell phone is important technology. It allows people to communicate with family and friends, especially when they don't live near them, or don't see them for some time.

Computers are a technology that allows people to learn more information on any topic that they are interested in. For students, they can find websites for homework help, or allow them to communicate with their friends.

A car is also an important technology. It allows people to travel to different areas, where one can discover a new culture, or way of life. Cars also allow a person to travel to stores and buy anything, without the worry that they won't be able to carry it on public transportation or it being to heavy to walk home.

About Me

Two truths and a lie
1. I own two donkeys
2. I am a certified scuba diver
3. I don't like Italian Food

My name is Amy I am seventeen years old and going to be a senior at my high school I work as much as I can during the summer as a hostess, camp counselor, and a babysitter. I am with groups of 20 to 30 kids ages 5 to 11, all through the month of July. I help them in their arts and crafts, technology work, and we also swim and play games in the gym.

When I'm not working I hang out with my friends and we have as much fun as possible. We go to movies, bowling, and of course the mall. My favorite movie is Pirates of the Caribbean 3, I love the whole trilogy so far. I don't read that much but my favorite book would be Harry Potter Book #6. I can't wait until the seventh comes out I want to read it so much.

I enjoy being home for the summer. I do have two donkeys, and am a scuba diver. I love Italian food, I would eat it everyday if I could. If I'm not working at my jobs, or hanging out with my friends, I'm on the phone, computer, watching TV, running, or with my family.

Throughout the years, I've traveled to Mexico, London, and Italy. I love to travel, and someday hope to travel through Europe for a summer. I want to travel to Greece, France, and Japan (even though that is not in Europe)

During this week project at IT, I am looking forward to getting better with Internet websites. Understanding the different cultures is also an interest of mine. The camera projects I will enjoy, since I like taking pictures, especially of everyday items that nobody actually thinks about. I am also interested in getting some major and career ideas that can be used with IT.
